CAT-W Essay #1
According to this essay “Why Are Children Becoming Obese?” by David Kraft, there are several reasons that children are becoming
obese. The first reason is the food that they mostly eat. Nowadays, they prefer to eat fast food or snack more that fresh food such as
vegetable. Second, they spend most of time just sitting on a chair or couch. I mean just stay in home. They do not want to do activities.
Third, the biological elements such as metabolism also affect to children. The last thing is their parent’s lifestyles. This is the most
important key factor of childhood obesity. They follow their parents’ behavior. Therefore, the parents who do not eat healthy food are
bad role models for their children.
One of the ideas in the article that I find interesting is that children are affected by their parents. This is an inevitable result. If the
parents do not realize the importance of healthy eating habit, they might not offer fresh food to their children. Also, most children learn
something from their parents. They want to follow what their parents do. The parents have a responsibility to take care their children. In
this case, I include all of things not just put their children to sleep and feed them. They also have a duty to take care them in healthy
conditions. If they do not care about what their children eat, the children do not know what problem is. They do not perceive the
seriousness of obesity. Obesity has a harmful influence on children’s health such as degradation of physical strength and weaker bones.
In my country, which is South Korea, most parents are overprotective of their children. For that reason, they always say “Yes” to
everything their children want, and food is no exception. They know junk food is unhealthy and their children are gaining more weight if
they allow their children to eat junk food. Nevertheless, they feel difficulty to refuse the demand of their children. This wrong idea leads
to the bad eating habits.
When I was elementary school student, in that time period, there was less junk food than now. Also, we did not know much about
computer or cellphone so that we spent most of time did outdoor activities with friends. It means we predominantly eat healthy food not
fast food and have active lifestyles. However, when I was in high school, my lifestyle was totally changed. Because of my school life. In
South Korea, most high school students spend fourteen to fifteen hours in school. They go to school at 7:30 and finish at 5p.m. After that,
they stay at school until 10p.m. for self-study. This means most of the time, they sit on a chair and study under stress so that lots of
students gain weight in high school.
Nowadays, the childhood obesity is one of the serious issues that we have to resolve. To reduce the rates of childhood obesity,
every parent tries to set an example for their children. It is not only the children’s problem but also parent’s problem. When parents
change, the children change too. Do not let them unhealthy life. That is our obligation.
