CAT-W Essay #2
According to the essay “Technology and the College Generation” adapted from Courtney Rubin, today most college students spend
less time on their email whereas most professors prefer to use email. This phenomenon influences the communication between
professors and students. Reynol Junco, who is an associate professor of library science at Perdue, showed us the result of their
experiment about how much time the college students use their email. They just use it for six minutes a day. Also, some of them do not
know that they have a college email address. The only thing that students spent less time on than email is using search engines such as
Google or Yahoo. Most of the time they check their social networking like Twitter or Facebook. For that reason, they are more interested
in social media than email. However, most college professors are not close to social media so that when they inform students of an
assignment or information about the class, they let their students know by email. That is the reason why the communication between
professor and student processes slowly. Students should try to check their email every day for good communication with their
professors.
One thing that I find the most interesting idea in this article is the students prefer social media to email. These days lots of people
use social networking sites. We can easily connect to our Facebook or Twitter using cell phone. After the social networking sites
proliferate, most people rarely use text message and email because they can chat with others in their social networking sites. They get
used to fast communications so that they want their professors also use social media rather than email. However, when we go to college,
we must check our email every day regardless of our preference. This is the most important and fundamental part for successful college
life. Of course, the social media is more convenient than email, but when we deal with college life, we need to follow our professors’
method.
When I was twenty years old, I did not have a smartphone so I did not use social networking sites. The social networking sites are
optimized for smartphone users. Therefore, I used email to communicate with my professors and classmates. Moreover, I thought email
was the best way when I did group work. The chatting system of social networking sites made it hard to concentrate. Also, I thought it was
not an appropriate platform for serious conversation. However, most classmates told me I should buy a smartphone and sign up for
Facebook because they felt uncomfortable about contacting me. After that, I bought a smartphone and started Facebook. Even though I
realize the usability of social media, I still regard email is the best method to communicate with professors and classmates especially for
class work. The social networking sites are good for everyday use.
Nowadays, we always deal with lots of modern technology. Our lifestyle is consistently changed by technology. We get accustomed
to using new technology; hence we are easily fed up with things that we use now. We can see the instance of this in the article
“Technology and the College Generation”. Most students want faster interaction and more informal way to communicate with their
professors. They do not feel the necessity of an email. However, email is the method that most professors prefer. For that reason, we
should try to get in the habit of checking email every day. The former things are important as much as new things.
